You probably recall Ars postinga CNET story a few days ago in which Sun's senior director of desktop marketing, Tony Siress, was extensively quoted on the subject of Sun's and Apple's cooperation on a port of Star Office to OS X. The article was based on a an interview with Siress by CNET reporter Joe Wilcox, and the quotes in it seemed to clearly and unambiguously outline a plan by both Sun and Apple to move the porting process forward by having developers from both companies working on the Star Office code base. The plan even included projected dates for certain milestones, and specifics about which Sun offices were involved in certain parts of the port. It all seemed perfectly plausible in light of recent MS-Apple tensions, if a bit surprising.
All the same, while it's a great and perhaps superior alternative to Office and even Apple's iWork, the money spent on StarOffice will be money wasted. If OpenOffice didn't exist, buying. Almost immediately after this story went live, Sun felt a great disturbance in the Force, like millions of OpenOffice.org developers and Mac zealots crying out in pain. The OpenOffice.org developers, who've been working on their own port of OpenOffice (the open source version of Sun's commercially packaged StarOffice), were stunned and hurt that Sun had been working behind their backs with Apple, and they wasted no time in making their feelings known to Sun. The hardcore Mac crowd, on the other hand, immediately dismissed the story as worthless FUD--yet another 'death of Apple' rumor disguised as 'news.' There was no way, they felt, that Apple would pull a stunt like this, since the loss of MS Office would mean certain death for the Mac. Nope, this was just more fearmongering from the malevolent PC rumor mill.
I doubt that Sun cared too much what the Mac folks thought, but they certainly didn't want their OpenOffice.org volunteer developers jumping ship. Hence, a massive 180 degree turn was in order. But did Sun contact CNET and ask for a retraction? Nope, and I'll explain why in a second. Sun did contact reporters from other publications, though. MacCentral, for instance, was quick to communicate Sun's denials to the Mac faithful:
While Sun officials acknowledge work on an OpenOffice port for Mac OS X, the company denied a port of StarOffice is in the works [ed: emphasis mine]. 'There is a port of OpenOffice in development that is coming along quite well, but there is no development of a StarOffice port at this time,' Nancy Lee, group product marketing manager, office productivity at Sun, told MacCentral.
Lee categorized Apple's help with OpenOffice as being no different than the company would offer any other Mac OS X developer, but said the companies were not cooperating on a commercial version of StarOffice. 'Currently, there is no joint effort between Sun and Apple to develop StarOffice, but Apple has been very supportive of the OpenOffice.org effort,' Lee said.
Yesterday after I read the the MacCentral story and a similar one at Infoworld, I went back and read the original CNET article again. The quotes from Sun's Tony Siress are very clear, and it seemed impossible that the whole situation could be explained away by suggesting that the quotes were taken out of context. In fact, the quotes are so clear, direct, and specific that I was quite shocked to see some Mac advocates repeatedly suggesting that the remarks were simply misrepresented and misinterpreted by the CNET reporter. Did these people actually read the article in question, or did they just assume it was bogus and then lightly skim it to confirm their suspicions? If at the end of this article you still entertain the notion that the whole mix-up is a matter of quotes willfully taken out of context, I strongly encourage you to go back and read the article again.
For the CNET article to be as completely erroneous as Sun would have us believe, there were only two ways that you could plausibly explain the huge discrepancy between Nancy Lee's remarks to MacCentral and Tony Siress's remarks to CNET 1) the CNET reporter, Joe Wilcox, had fabricated the quotes entirely out of thin air, or 2) Tony Siress was the one making things up (or, alternatively, he's completely out of the loop). Option number 2 seemed unlikely to me, since Mr. Siress is, after all, Sun's senior director of desktop marketing, and you don't get that position by making a habit of babbling complete nonsense to reporters (or by being out of the loop on your company's desktop software plans). So that left option number 1 as the only plausible explanation for the CNET story's alleged lack of contact with reality.
